Once, a stopping place for Arab sailing vessels during the 15th century, the island, then called by the name Amisa, was mostly inhabited by Muslim population. With a lucrative weaving industry that made a fine fabric called Maluane cloth, the island soon became a site of attraction and business prospects for Portuguese traders. That’s a prime reason it is home to many a historic remnants belonging to the Portuguese era that once flourished there.
