      Matola is Mozambique's second largest city and is almost an extension of Maputo as both cities have now grown and almost merged into one giant metropolis. It is the capital of Maputo Province, while Maputo is capital of Maputo City, a different denomination

      Unlike Maputo which has the option of many taxis and tuk-tuks (tchopelas) Matola is a large spread out city that can be best covered using local minibuses (chapas). However this form is very problematic, having your own vehicle in Matola is almost a must

      Matola offers various shopping areas. Apart from the basis street markets, near Al-Khalil hotel and KFC market, one can find good super stores as well.

      1) Shoprite: famous SA chain of stores having all basic necessities. it is on the junction of En-2 and En-4. The same compound has one Halal restaurant (Nautilius) and famous Mundos restaurant and bar.

      2) Spar : it is situated in Poets park, near Mosque Hamza. It also has a range of all basic amenities.
      IN the same compound one can find many shops selling quality clothes and shoes. Many restaurants are also there, namely Mimmos, Princessa and Gelatorio Bambini.

      3) Food Lovers Market : It is situated at 5 mins drive from Hotel Al-Khalil. You cant find better fruits and vegetables in Matola than this. Also houses small snack area and Bakery. A Chinese market is also situated nearby with basic hardware and gift items.

      Unfortunately, Matola does not have many great eateries. But you can find something to eat at the following:

      1) KFC - Halal - on En-2, while going towards Boane. It tastes ok and probably very few restaurant are opened until 10 pm.

      2) Venezia - Halal - another Halal restaurant specializing in grilled chicken and pizza. Also has small bakery with it. Its located next to KFC Matola.

      3) Mundos - Its located in the compound of Shoprite, on the junction of En-4 and EN-2. Nice place to hangout. Also have nice bar to select from. Closed on Mondays.

      4) Nautilius - Halal - specializes in few Indian foods. Also serves a variety of locally popular food. Food to look out for : Biryani and Butter chicken.

      5) Mimmos - Italian restaurant- located in Poets park, a family restaurant with play area for children. Specializing in pastas and pizzas.

      6) Princessa - Another good restaurant in Poets park. Nice food and ambience but very slow service.

      7) Gelatorio de Bambini - Nice restaurant for light meal and snacks. People with sweet tooth will love this place. Nice place to hangout.

      8) Taj Indian -Halal- Specializes in Indian Food. Butter chicken, Chicken Tikka masala and Biryani are the favourites. Located in Shelyn's condominium on En-4, near Chinese flats.

      9) Sophia - Located near South Africa bus stand, intercape office. Sophisticated environment with enjoyable meal. Nice sea food and bar.

There is a large Shoprite supermarket on the opposite corner and all of the best restaurant options in close vicinity, including Matola's only KFC. The rooms are spacious, with all amenities one could require. Prices range from $110 to $140 USD.
