                              	Minamiboso City (南房総市) is at the tip of the Boso peninsula which offers a combination of mountains and beaches, now popular for cafes, surfing, flower fields, and 'hands-on' tourism.

The city was established in 2006 as a results of a merger between seven different towns and villages: (from north to south, west to east) Tomiyama, Tomiura, Miyoshi, Maruyama, Wada, Chikura, and Shirahama. Their names are still used to refer to the different districts of Minamiboso City.

                              	                              	                              		TrainThe JR Uchibō Line (内房線) starts in [wiki=4389869b3989f0097dc92e0afecd2e94]Chiba[/wiki] station and runs through Minamiboso, with six stops within the city.

The Boso Nanohana Line (房総なのはな号) runs from [wiki=62413a57c5e3dc51177995fa175d3286]Tokyo[/wiki] station, while the Nanso Satomi Line (南総里見号) runs from [wiki=4389869b3989f0097dc92e0afecd2e94]Chiba[/wiki] station. There is also the Keikyu Limousine Bus (京急リムジンバス) that runs from [wiki=964ba3c4bd69b63da15c2f02790dd68f]Yokohama[/wiki] and [wiki=cc2c166228790937e1caa4c2d0186af8]Haneda Airport[/wiki].
CarMinamiboso is about 90 minutes away from [wiki=62413a57c5e3dc51177995fa175d3286]Tokyo[/wiki] via the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line and 70 minutes away from [wiki=4389869b3989f0097dc92e0afecd2e94]Chiba[/wiki] City.

                              	The JR Uchibo Line has six stops within Minamiboso City: Iwai, Tomiura, Chikura, Chitose, Minamihara and Wadaura.

The eight Roadside Stations within the City make driving pleasant --- not only do they provide public restrooms and rest areas, but they are interesting destinations in themselves, providing gifts, local foods, opportunities and sights. Some roadside stations also offer rental car services.

A few local bus lines run from the train stations, and regular and sightseeing taxies are available.[http://www.nanboutaxi.com/kankou_taxi/kankou_taxi.html]

There are many hiking trails that go along the ocean and through the mountains, such as up Mt.Iyogatake or along the Tomiura bayshore.

Rental bicycles are available at various train stations, tourist information sites and roadside stations for 500 yen a day. You also have the option of dropping the bicycle off at a different location from where you picked it up.

                              	The lush mountains and vast ocean create a beautiful backdrop for many sight-seeing attractions in Minamiboso.

*One of the oldest lighthouses in Japan, this Meiji-era tower is located on the southern-most tip of Chiba Prefecture. 

*The only shrine in Japan dedicated to the god of cooking. It is known for its "Knife Ceremony" held only a few times a year, during which a skilled practitioner cuts up a fish without touching it with their hands.

*Various local festivals take place during the year, including the Shirahama Ama (female fishing divers) Festival in July and Sangyo (local industry) Festival in November. 

*Walk along the beaches and flower fields of Chikura for this annual event held every March. Choose a course from 5km to 40km long to walk with your friends or just to admire the scenery.

                              	There are plenty of activities to spend the day doing. The city is known for its 'hands-on' tourism[url=http://www.mboso-etoko.jp/mimamiboso_education/index.html],]which allows tourists to take on a more active role, sometimes picking fruits and flowers, making traditional Boshu fans, or learning how to make futomaki matsuri sushi.

Michi no Eki or Roadside Stations serve as focal points for these activities, either providing information about opportunities in the area, or providing the opportunity itself.[http://www.biwakurabu.jp/michinoeki/index.html[/url]

*Depending on the time of the year, farms provide opportunities to pick strawberries, blueberries, musk melon, biwa (loquat), dragonfruit, and mikan oranges. Often times, for a small fee participants are allowed to pick and eat as many fruits during a set length of time, and then allowed to purchase more fruits to take home or send to others at farm-direct discount prices.

*Depending on the time of the year, farms provide opportunities to pick pinks, marigolds, lilies, stock, poppies, carnations and much much more. 

*The Iwai area provides opportunities to experience Jibiki-Ami, or pulled net fishing, and eat the freshly caught fish right on the beach. Groups of people work together to pull in a large off-shore net, bringing with it all the fresh horse mackerel and yellowtail fish caught inside.

*Various workshops provide the chance to learn how to make different local specialties, such as futomaki matsuri sushi, boshu fans, buckwheat noodles, dried fish, and more. Bring home not just souvenirs, but new skills.

*Beaches on the ocean-side or "Sotobo" of Minamiboso have waves that are perfect for surfers. There are also many professional and semi-professional surf competitions held in the area.

*Over the summer, various beaches around the city open up as seaside resorts, providing lifeguards as well as summer beach houses that offer food and amenities. Beaches on the ocean-side or "Sotobo" offer dynamic waves, while those on the bay-side or "Uchibo" offer calm wading areas.

                              	Each Roadside Station offers a variety of local items and souvenirs to purchase and take home, whether it is to gift to your colleagues or just to treat yourself.

There are many Farmer's Markets that sell fresh produce and seafood directly from farmers and fishermen. Not only do you get the freshest products available, but you have the peace of mind knowing exactly where your food came from. Many places will list the grower or fisherman's name, adding a nice touch of personality as well. Prices are also quite low, as the middle man is eliminated.

                              	Fresh seafood from the bountiful ocean, fruits that grow sweet in the warm climate, and dairy from the cows that roam the mountains are all a part of Boshu cuisine.

*Fresh horse mackerel (aji) or sardine (iwashi) is minced and blended with miso paste, ginger, scallions and shaped into a patty. Namero is the raw sashimi form, while Sanga-yaki is cooked.

*Wada-chou is home to the only whaling port in the [wiki=4bd190f8a78d51b34f0932cc5ead2cd2]Kanto[/wiki] region, where a limited number of whales per year are allowed to be caught. Whaling has long been a part of Japanese culture, and locals have various ways of preparing the meat, and no part of the animal goes wasted. Try it raw as sashimi, fried as tatsuta-age, or simmered as tsukudani.

*Tomiura-chou is known for biwa, or loquat, a large citrus stone-fruit. The biwa grown here are top class, and are thus presented to the Imperial Family yearly. Some popular savory and sweet dishes made using these biwa include biwa curry, ice cream, juice and sweet bean youkan.

*These organically grown flowers aren't just pleasing to the eyes, but also the palette. Try some marigold-ice cream, or a variety of tempura flowers.

*Boshu sushi is known for its larger size --- befitting of the hearty appetites of the local fishermen. Visit any sushi restaurant in the area and you are sure to get the freshest local ingredients.

                              	Available bottled or at the take-out cafe in the Roadside Station Tomiura Biwa Club. Also try biwa leaf tea (very similar to matcha), or if you have a sweet tooth, a biwa float with locally made ice cream.

*Locally brewed in the Miyoshi area, this craft beer is available bottled at various Roadside Stations and served at various restaurants. In addition to a dark, light, and pale ale, they also have a hotarumai beer made from Miyoshi-grown rice, as well as seasonal strawberry and blueberry fruity ales.

*The Chikura area is home to a great number of popular cafes, each offering creative menus and ambiance. Locals banded together to make Chikura known as a 'cafe town,' befitting of the relaxing surrounding environment.

                              	Translated as "Guest Houses for Quality Family Time," this local program offers a network of guest houses (minshuku) in Minamiboso.

*Though they aren't luxurious, minshuku guest houses offer an at-home coziness that larger hotels can't offer. For a very reasonable price, you can opt for meals with your stay, and the small scale of facilities allow hosts to take great individualized care of guests.

*During the summer, camping out on the beach is a popular activity. There are also opportunities to fish and grill your catch right on the seashore. Meanwhile, up in the mountains of Miyoshi, there are a few log cabins that allow a quiet and relaxing stay.
