The main way to get around in Perpignan (due to its relatively small size) is by foot, but there are buses run by [url=http://www.ctpmperpignan.com/]Compagnie Transports[/url] that go right through the city centre, and then further out, even going as far as [wiki=56abf8e52724846062ef51ef877d7fbf]Cabestany[/wiki] and [wiki=ad237043c244eccd22e0747996435176]Canet[/wiki]. Driving is also a good way to get about, with lots of underground parking in the city centre, but beware, during the summer and 'tourist season' there will be a lot of traffic, and few parking places left.

The Cathedral of St Jean Baptiste was begun in 1324 and finished in 1509.

From the outside unimpressive but inside a formidable construction in the typical south French gothic style.
Be aware that Sundays the church is busy with one service after the other which makes it impossible to visit on this day if you don't want to sit through a whole service of 1 1/2 hours.

    * The 13th century castle of the kings of Majorca sits on the high citadel, surrounded by ramparts, reinforced for Louis XI and Charles V, which were updated in the 17th century by Louis XIV's military engineer Vauban.

Not one of the apparently great tapas restaurants of the city. The boquerones and garlicky mussels were enjoyable but the pulpitos were inedible as they weren't fresh but frozen. Other dishes were forgettable including lomo, albondigas, grilled vegetables and pan tomate. Paella seemed popular as opposed to tapas menu. Slow service. €50 for 9 plates and one beer. (May 2015)

  • filter_dramaStay Safe
Perpignan is a relatively safe city compared to larger and more populous ones. However, the districts of Saint-Jacques should be visited with caution, and ideally never on one’s own, or while wearing jewellery (or other signs of wealth).
