The city of Deggendorf covers an area of 77.21 km² and has a population of more than 30,000. The city itself is 314 m above sea level.

The earliest traces of settlement in the area are found near the Danube, about 8,000 years ago. Both Bronze Age and Celtic era archeological findings indicate continuous habitation through the years. Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor, established his supremacy over the area in 1002.

Deggendorf was the site of a displaced persons camp for Jewish refugees after World War II. It housed approximately 2,000 refugees, who created a cultural center that included two newspapers, the Deggendorf Center Review and Cum Ojfboj, theater group, synagogue, mikvah, kosher kitchen, and more. The camp even issued its own currency known as the Deggendorf Dollar. Many of the camp's residents were survivors of the concentration camp at [wiki=ed6d5de774f0034356bd6dc7579cecbb]Theresienstadt[/wiki]. The camp closed on June 15, 1949.

Deggendorf is a small town and easy to navigate. Just always keep the church tower in sight. Its in the centre of the town. Most parts of inner Deggendorf can be reached by foot and by bike.

Visit Deggendorf in late July when the local beer festival (Volkfest) takes place at the Festplatz. This is like a mini [wiki=7b88a4aca50f33c258efc438d098c9f4#Do]Oktoberfest[/wiki] with huge beer tents, but with virtually no tourists. A great opportunity to down a few litre-glasses of beer whilst dancing on the benches and singing your favourite German songs played by the local ompah-band.

There are quite a good, albeit not cheap options to eat:

    Hoettle Hotel
Hotel in the town centre, offering exclusive bavarian and austrian cuisine. Operated by the owner and his mum personally. Gets very busy for dinner, particular during the weekends. Excellent austrian and international wines. Id you are ready to spent and get excellent food, drinks, service and environment in exchange - this is the place to be.

    'Knoedelwerferin
Not far from Hoettel Hotel, also located at the Deggendorf Central Plaza. Excellent bavarian cuisine, with a wide range of mashed potato balls and pork nockle. Great variety of beers.

    Hotel Donauhof
A bit outside the town centre. Its a hotel with restaurant. However, the restaurant is not open every day. Better call in advance. Great fish and meat, outstanding service and environment.

Please remember that this part of Germany nothing come at cheap prices. Better prepare some good amount of cash and credit cards.
