Törli, The upper town gate was preserved unlike the lower gate which was demolished in 1827. It is the town's landmark. It protected the south entrance to the city and concludes the Rathausstrasse (town hall street). The foundation originates from the 13th century, the clock tower was built in 1554.Until 1959 the entire transit between Basel and the Hauensteinpass went trough the old town gate. * Aussichtsturm, at 614 m above sea level on top of the look-out tower you can see as far as Basel, even France and Germany. All around you can see the valleys and high planes of the Jura mountain range. There are several hiking trails to reach the tower (open all year, 0.50 CHF entrance fee) and the restaurant (open Sundays and Public Holidays 7am to 6pm).
* Roman Water Pipe, the roman settlers brought water from Lausen trough an underground tunnel to Augusta Raurica. At the Heidenloch there are pieces of the pipe to visit.

The highlight of the Liestals Carnival is the Chienbäse at the Fasnachtssonntag (Sunday before carnval, 17.2.2013/9.3.2014/22.2.2015) at 7.15pm. The blazing Kienbesen (bundled wooden logs, like a broom around a wooden handle) are carried trough the darkened historic centre. In between there are some fire waggons with flames several meters high.
The establishment of the Swiss Confederation is traditionally dated to 1 August 1291; Swiss National Day is celebrated on the anniversary. In Liestal there is a celebration with music and fireworks on the Sichtern.
