Ranger derives its name from the Texas Rangers who had a camp there starting in the 1870s. Settlers began moving into the area in the 1880s. In 1917 oil was discovered, and the town was incorporated in 1919. There was an oil boom that lasted for several years. The town's population reached over 30,000 in the 1920s. The boom was followed by a bust, in the 1930 census the population had dropped to under 7000. In the 2010 census the town's population was 2,468.

Ranger is home to Ranger College (formally known as Ranger Junior College). The college was founded in 1926, and it is one of the oldest continuously operating 2 year colleges in Texas.
