Tarrytown is easily accessible from the northeastern [wiki=1f122dd19db580fd03635dd699fb49de]United States of America[/wiki] via interstate highways such as the New England and New Jersey Turnpikes (I-95) and the New York State Thruway ]system. The I-87 portion of the Thruway connecting [[Albany_(New_York)|Albany] and [wiki=d97e023dce2bb237a0d44f46d8ee9438]New York City[/wiki] crosses the Hudson River at Tarrytown on the Tappan Zee bridge as does I287, which connects with I-95 to the east. The Saw Mill River Parkway, which runs along the village's eastern flank, connects with the Taconic State Parkway to the north (to Albany and the I-90 east-west portion of the Thruway system) and the Henry Hudson Parkway into New York City.

• By train

Metro-North Railroad - Hudson line, .]Express service between Tarrytown station and New York City's Grand Central Terminal is about 35 minutes. Local service is available between other Metro-North commuter stations. Local taxis swarm the station at the approach of a train (if you are accustomed to New York City yellow cabs with their single fare restriction and meters, be aware that taxis in Tarrytown can take multiple passengers and charge flat rates by zone). On-board train fares are subject to a stiff surcharge, so buy your tickets at the station or at the vending machines located on the southbound (to New York) platform. Zipcar ]has a rental car at Tarrytown station through Spring 2008, after which Enterprise ]will have the franchise for Metro-North stations.

• filter_dramaGet around
Getting around Tarrytown depends on whether or not you are staying in local lodging and what you want to see. If arriving by train from New York City and planning on only a day trip within the central business district, you can easily get about on foot or by local taxi. NY Waterway tours have their own bus transportation between destinations. If you stay in local hotels or motels, your own vehicle or taxi service are something of a necessity. Broadway (aka Route 9) is the main north to south route through the village. It is divided into North Broadway and South Broadway by Main Street.

Taxi rides within the village of Tarrytown are a flat $4 per destination, with an additional $1 per person going to the same destination. For journeys into the neighboring village of [wiki=bbe62e26c2d2eb6d08e36c121d48d329]Sleepy Hollow[/wiki] the base rate is $6. Rates to other destinations vary, ask for a quote from your driver before setting off. A tip of $1 per ride (i.e. around 20%) is usual. You may be expected to share your taxi with other passengers going in the same direction. This is most usual when joining a cab at the rank at Tarrytown station but sometimes happens with cabs called by phone as well.

There are also several Bee Line bus routes that may come in handy. The 1T & 13 both serve the downtown Tarrytown area.

There are no "big box" stores within the village. In fact, except for Subway, CVS, 7-11 and Walgreens pharmacies, chain stores don't have a presence in the village. Instead, the central business district, encompassing Main Street and the adjacent portions of Broadway, offers numerous antique stores and boutiques, gift shops, delicatessens, and restaurants. If you max out the memory on your digital camera, the Walgreens near the train station sells flash memory and blank CDs.
