Poughkeepsie is a small, mostly residential city. There are some neighborhoods that are relatively safe, but some where visitors and locals should use caution, especially at night. Always travel in groups and stay in well-lit, populated areas. If there is an emergency, dial 911 for police, fire department, and medical.

Downtown and points north are generally not the safest areas (Once you are out of the city, the north is fine, e.g. the area around Marist College and Dutchess Community College). Main Street is somewhat better closer to the train station. While the train station area can also attract some shady characters late at night, it is well-lit and well-trafficked enough that most people don't have issues here.

The area roughly bounded by Clark St/the city border to the north, Innis Ave/Route 115 to the east, Montgomery St to the south, and Market St to the west) is particularly known as an area to stay away from at night if possible. Unfortunately, this area also includes most of the historic district of Poughkeepsie and a few of the better restaurants. For some reason, the Dutchess County Jail is also located in the middle of residential N Hamilton St, which also happens to be very close to the parking area for the Walkway over the Hudson. Southern and eastern areas of the city are generally regarded as being safer, and the area adjacent to Vassar College is quite safe, even alone at night.

Deer overpopulation is a problem throughout the Hudson Valley. Use caution while driving at night even in residential areas within the city limits, as deer are known to eat from backyard gardens and have very little fear of human activity in general. Deer-related car accidents have occurred on Main St. in Poughkeepsie before.

-With the high deer population in the area comes a high population of deer ticks. Dutchess County has the highest incidence of Lyme disease per capita IN THE WORLD, with several other Hudson Valley counties not far behind, so check for ticks after entering wooded areas and areas with high grass, and remove them immediately. Ticks typically come out as soon as the snow melts (usually mid March-early April) and don't disappear for the winter until the first extended freeze (usually early to mid November).
