    This old town was discovered in the 1750’s. It was named in honor of General Joseph Bloomfield, a Revolutionary soldier and officer in the War of 1812 who later became Governor of New Jersey. In 1812 it became independent of Newark. The name was voted by the people from Wardsesson or Watsessing. It was a mill town in the 19th century. The suburban town is conveniently located near the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, Route 3, Route 21 the Jersey Shore and even New York City. It is exit 148/150 off of the Garden State Parkway. The population is approximately 50,000.
    The town's residents pride themselves on their small prospering town and take quite an action to everyday better their living environment.

    By Bus

    Bloomfield is served by the New Jersey Transit Montclair-Boonton Line to Hoboken Terminal or on Midtown Direct trains (about 55%) to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan via the Secaucus Junction. New Jersey Transit bus service is available to Newark on the 11, 27, 28, 29, 34, 72, 90, 92, 93 and 94 routes, with local service on the 709 bus line. In October 2009, the Go Bus 28 route was introduced, offering service "nearly" all day from Bloomfield Train Station to Newark Liberty International Airport

    By Train

    The Bloomfield train station is located off of Bloomfield Avenue in the downtown area. The Watsessing Avenue rail station is at the corner of Watsessing Avenue and Orange Street, and is located below ground.
    The Grove Street station on the Newark City Subway at the south end of Bloomfield provides service to Newark Penn Station, created as part of an extension to Belleville and Bloomfield that opened in 2002.

    Brookdale Park - established in 1928, covers over 121 acres in Bloomfield and Montclair, making it the county's third-largest park. It is administered by the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs. They hold many outdoor concerts, camps, flea markets, etc during the summer for patrons to enjoy. They also hold a very popular Fourth of July Fire Works display.

    Watsessing Park - which is the county's fourth largest park, covers 69.67 acres, split between Bloomfield and East Orange, and features sections of the Second River and Toney's Brook flowing through the park. Also administered by the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs.

    The Oakes Estate - The building, designed by Charles Granville Jones was built in 1895, was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 6, 1981. It is home to the Bloomfield Cultural Center. Available for guided group tours, Oakeside is a living reminder of earlier times, when textile factories formed the cornerstone of Bloomfield’s economy, and when canal boats pulled by mule, transported these goods to Port Newark by way of the Morris Canal.

    Green Historic District - The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 20, 1978. Home to some of the oldest buildings in the town. Also where the college is located.
