If you are heading to Munising from the West (i.e. coming from Marquette, Houghton/Hancock, Northern Wisconsin, Minnesota) then you will take U.S. 41 South through the city of Marquette and turn left at the junction with M-28 in the town of Harvey. Follow M-28 for about 45 miles, and you will arrive in Munising.

If coming from the East (i.e. coming from Sault Ste. Marie, Mackinac Island, Tahquamenon Falls, the Lower Peninsula) you will travel West on M-28, which is exit 386 on 1-75. M-28 brings you directly to Munising.

If coming from the South (i.e. coming from Escanaba, Green Bay, Chicago), you will follow US-41 North until you reach the town of Trenary (about 35 miles North of Escanaba). At Trenary, you will turn right onto M-67. Follow M-67 for approximately 12 miles, until you reach the town of Chatham. At Chatham, turn right onto M-94. Where M-94 intersects with M-28, turn left towards Munising.

Munising is a small town, and the downtown and lakeshore can easily be seen on foot. Most of the area's attractions, however, are located outside of the city and require a car to access. The area has an abundance of snowmobile and ATV trails, and during the summer kayaking, sailing, and pontoon boating are all common on Munising Bay. There are plenty of hiking trails inside and outside of the National Lakeshore.

[wiki=24ecda20347b3c09050855b9af976984]Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore[/wiki] - A national park that stretches 43 miles along the southern coast of Lake Superior, just to the East of Munising. The area is known for its beautiful, naturally colored cliffs and rock formations, as well as its beaches, waterfalls, and undisturbed wilderness.
*[wiki=54ae30dc3fc390ebb56f19ff4d59ec5b]Grand Island National Recreation Area[/wiki] - A 13,500 acre recreation area on the mostly uninhabited Grand Island, located just across from Pictured Rocks in Munising Bay. The Island can be reached by ferry and is a popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers, and campers. In the winter, the cliffs of the island create magnificent natural ice caves that can be accessed with a permit from the Department of Natural Resources.
*Waterfalls - The Munising area is home to 17 major waterfalls, including Chapel Falls, Alger Falls, Munising Falls, and Miners Falls. The abundance of soft sandstone (the same rock that the cliffs of Pictured Rocks is made of) is what facilitated the creation of so many waterfalls in the area. Many can be reached by car or short hike, and all but a few are free of charge.
