Rayong is the gateway from the east to the north and northeast of Thailand. As such, there are many regular bus services connecting Rayong with Bangkok, and other provinces such as Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, Nakon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani.
Suvarnabhumi Airport is located east of Bangkok, 150 km from Rayong. Transport by car/taxi and bus takes about 2 hours.
Intercity buses from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Rayong. Service hours from 06:00 to 21:00. The bus route was found to be cancelled on Apr 30, 2013. There is no bus to go from the public transport center of the Airport. It is unknown when the service will resume.
Take a shuttle bus from Suvarnabhumi Airport from Level 2 or 4, at Entrances 3, 6, and 9 to the Public Transportation Centre, free of charge. Then go to the Intercity Bus Counter and buy your ticket to Rayong. Beware of hustlers.
Bus from Bangkok to Rayong: Bus leaves from Ekamai bus station and Mo Chit bus station. Service from 04:00 until 22:00, every 40 minutes and takes about 3 hours.
There is also a minibus that leaves from Victory Monument. It leaves approximately every 45 minutes. The minivans are parked at the Century Mall and you can buy a ticket in the basement of the mall. The minivan will drop you off by the Clock Tower in Rayong.
A minibus from Chachoengsao will cost B150. It goes via Chonburi and Pattaya,taking 3 hours. It continues past Soi 39 bus station road, so ask to get off here beforehand.
From Bangkok, driving to Rayong is easy.
# Via Sukhumvit Rd, Hwy 3: drive via Bang Pu, Bang Pakong, Bang Saen, Si Racha, Pattaya, Sattahip, Ban Chang to Mueang district of Rayong. This route totals 220 km.
# Via Bang Na-Trat Rd, Hwy 34: drive through Bang Phli and Bang Bo districts of Samut Prakan Province before entering Hwy 3 at km70 in Bang Pakong. Then continue in the same direction as the first route. The route is a total of 220 km.
# Via Hwy 36: drive on the second route till km140, in Bang Lamung, and turn left to Hwy 36. Rayong is 70 km away. This route totals 210 km.
# Via Hwy 344, from Chonburi: drive through Ban Bueng, Nong Yai, Wang Chan, to Klaeng district of Rayong. This route is 180 km and suits those who are going to visit attractions in Klaeng or continue their journey to Chanthaburi and Trat Provinces. Rayong is 42 km away via Hwy 3.
# Via Hwy 7, from Phattanakan Rd: drive to Chonburi, then use Hwy 36 to reach Rayong. This route is a distance of 175 km.
From Bangkok City by Hwy 3, Sukhumvit Rd is 3 hours.
You can hire a taxi from the Bangkok area to Rayong Province for about 3,000 baht. Only use taxis with metres. You can negotiate a cheaper fare with the taxi driver. This will work out cheaper and you are unlikely to be taken a slower, longer route. You will still have to pay the expressway tolls if you take that route.
U-Tapao is the local airport, and serves both Rayong and Pattaya.
As at Jan 2016, an internet check showed that no airline flies to or from Bangkok.
However, Bangkok Airways flies to and from Koh Samui and Phuket ; Thai Airasia to and from Chiangmai, Udon Thani and Hat Yai; and Kana Airlines to and from Chiangmai.
Not all of these flights are daily.
