The first written mention about Poprad came from 1256. Poprad was established by German incomers who named Poprad as "Popradzaza" and later changed name on “Deutschendorf“.
Airport Poprad-Tatry [http://www.airport-poprad.sk/?lang=en] is the highest placed airport in Europe. It is 718 m above sea-level.
There are two scheduled airlines:
- Air Baltic operates flights from Riga in winter season
- WizzAir flies to London Luton Airport 4 times a week throughout the year.
The airport serves schedule and charter airline operations, is a base for search and rescue air services, and handles general aviation. It does not offer any domestic flights currently. Charter flights are mainly operated in winter to destinations in Ukraine and Russia. Medical flights, VIP flights, ad hoc charters and ACMI flight also operate from the airport.

Trains can be caught from Bratislava main train station (Bratislava Hlavna Stanica) approximately every one to one and a half hours. The approximate fare for this trip is €12. Local electric trains (tram like) reach to nearby mountain resorts of [wiki=3082af037ccb47e6fb738fcf5a0b6b65]Vysoké Tatry[/wiki] - Smokovec, Tatranska Lomnica and Stbrske Pleso.

* [wiki=c0c476f443a40bee32bd31ce024e8f32]Zakopane[/wiki]: bus company Strama is going from the [wiki=c0c476f443a40bee32bd31ce024e8f32]Zakopane[/wiki] to Poprad with few stops in [wiki=3082af037ccb47e6fb738fcf5a0b6b65]Vysoké Tatry[/wiki], ticket cost €5,50 one way [http://www.strama.eu]. This service is irregular, especially in winter. In front of the station in Zakopane, there is a bus stop with a sign that lists the times the bus leaves for Poprad; unfortunately it's in Polish, but it's not hard to figure out. If the service is not running, look for the drivers that stop in front of the bus station. Tell the driver you want to go to Poprad. Your best bet is to get enough people who want to go to make it worth the driver's while. Some locals are also going, so ask them if you can join them to form a group. The driver will drop you off at Łysa Polana (Łysa is pronounced Lwee-Sah in Polish), the border town between Poland and Slovakia. Wait for another bus to take you to Poprad (not long).
