Pichanaki (full name Bajo Pichanaki, also spelt Pichanaqui) is located in Chanchamayo, Junin, Peru. The location is in the "selva alta" (high jungle), in the foothills of the Andes as they descend into the Amazon basin. The climate is tropical with temperatures around 25 C all year around. The rainy season is between November and March. The region is mainly agricultural, with little tourism (although it is growing). The Chanchamayo region is known traditionally for coffee, but also grows a lot of citrus fruits, pineapples, bananas, avocados and other tropical fruits.

There are night buses from Lima to Pichanaki (end station Satipo, via La Merced). The bus takes about 9-10 hours and the “bus-cama” seats are quite comfortable. Depending on the bus company (both Molina and Transmar are good), these leave from La Victoria (Av 28 Julio) or San Luis (Avd San Luis, Esq Nicolas Arriola 700) in the late evening 20:30 - 22:30. Both of these neighbourhoods are a bit dangerous at night, so take care and wait in the terminal (don’t walk the streets too much). Internet booking is not common here, so you will need to go to one of the terminals to buy tickets. The bus trip crosses the Andes and you might suffer a bit from altitude sickness (bring along some sorojchi tablets and lots of water).

There are also buses coming to Pichanaki from other cities such as Pucallpa and Huancayo.

Pichanaki is a small city and transport is walking or by the many moto-taxis.

The town is nicely located between two rivers and beautiful mountains, but the actual city is typical of smaller Peruvian cities (dirty, noisy and smelly). The town is essentially a large market for the farmers around, buying and selling are the main activities. There is a nice park in the centre of the town, and "la playa" (the beach) along the river offers a quite place with touristic restaurants (offering local jungle meats).

Pichanaki offers basic tourism, mainly from little tourist huts close to the central park. Activities include boat trips on the river, fishing, and visits to native communities and waterfalls/lakes. There are possibilities for other activities on request.
  • filter_dramaBuy
The strip of tourist huts near the park offer souvenirs, handicrafts and local produce (coffee and chocolate etc.)
  • filter_dramaEat
There are plenty of cheap places to eat, offering standard Peruvian menus for around 5 soles ($1.5) which usually include a soup, main meal and a drink. The main market (Mercado Uno) has a wide range of cheap authentic restaurants including ceviche. The cleanlines of such cheap eateries cannot be guarenteed, but they are certainly good value for money. D´Litz (Jr. Lima) is recommended for cheap menus (the service and food is great).

There are several more up-market restaurants (where the cleanliness is better and clean toilets are available):
Chifa China (Av. Michaela Bastidas) - Peruvian Chinese food. Good quality, large servings, menus available all day.
Cevicheria Costa Brava (Cnr of Av. Michaela Bastidas and Jr. Junin) - Cevicheria serving a wide range of seafood dishes. The local river fish are recommended (the doncella is delicious) instead of the seafood which has likely come from Lima.

Cafe Tinto (near the park, opposite the hospital) is a modern, clean and cosy cafe. They serve a wide range of coffees and basic food (sandwiches and cakes). Probably the only place in Pichanaki with an espresso machine and knowledge of how to make a good coffee. It is a relaxed place with friendly staff that don´t mind if you sit for a while. The other bonus is free wifi (usually good speed and reliable).
  • filter_dramaSleep
There are numerous hotels, hospedajes and hostels in Pichanaki ranging from 10-15 soles/room up to 50 soles/room. Most are located around the park in the centre of town.
