Tawau International Airport (IATA: TWU, ICAO: WBKW) is the second international airport of Sabah. There are flights from [wiki=dc5df51ea7e4a83d5663ca4ced03a1aa]Kuala Lumpur[/wiki] (2 hr 45 min, daily), and [wiki=1df24931995605930817fbdabf0fddc8]Kota Kinabalu[/wiki] (45 min, daily) on Malaysia Airlines[url=http://www.malaysiaairlines.com]]and AirAsia[url=http://www.airasia.com[/url].]In addition, there are also flights from [[Sandakan[/url]] (40 min, daily) on MASwings[url=http://www.maswings.com.my].]The airport is about 33 km away from the town. There are ATMs and a currency exchange at the airport but if you're arriving late, it'll almost certainly be closed and the ATMs do not always work, so make sure you've got some Malaysian ringgit before you arrive as you'll need it for the taxi or the bus.
The sole international flight into the airport is operated by AirAsia to/from [[Kuala Lumpur[/url]], [wiki=1df24931995605930817fbdabf0fddc8]Kota Kinabalu[/wiki], and [wiki=458e4cbc78201c1aec5fc53a31c59378]Singapore[/wiki] . The [wiki=458e4cbc78201c1aec5fc53a31c59378]Singapore[/wiki] - Tawau service, however, has been discontinued by AirAsia since March 2010.
Getting there/away: Airport taxis are available and charge RM45 for one way trip into town. There was also an airport bus service operated by Kasah Transport (S) Sdn. Bhd. (Tel: +6089-950208) to the city for RM10. The departure times of the airport bus from the city to the airport are as follows: 5:40AM, 8AM, 8:30AM, 10:30AM, 1PM, 2:30PM and 5PM. Besides buses and taxis, you can also rent a car from Tawau Airport.
There are daily buses from [wiki=1df24931995605930817fbdabf0fddc8]Kota Kinabalu[/wiki]'s North City Bus Station, but it's a long nine-hour journey. There are half a dozen companies and the fare is RM55.50. (Tel: +6013 879 7779)
There are also bus from [wiki=25101f3bc2ca64df2f8665df3411a388]Lahad Datu[/wiki], 2.5 hours away. Departure at 3:30PM, RM15.
Leaving Tawau all buses leave from close to the port a 10 minute walk from central down town (next to a very cheap local clothes market). There are lots of vendors, all 50rm to KK.
The bus will also drop you at Lahad Datu, Sandakan or Kinabulu national park (45rm).
Buses leave between 7am and 2pm.
NB Some buses make no stops on the long journey so it's wise to bring plenty of water and something for lunch (toilet inside).
The main ferry connections are to the Indonesian cities of [wiki=d25d4d0c9f459984cc75813e984ee483]Nunukan[/wiki] and [wiki=789fad2130bdd0f99ce3d1e6a3e2d078]Tarakan[/wiki], both in [wiki=c05c86af85b8f0b70f87c92d8cbcd865]East Kalimantan[/wiki] province.
