Los Mochis is a port city on the eastern coast of the Sea of Cortez. It's main interest for tourists is as a transportation hub. Los Mochis has an airport, ferry docks for transport across the Sea of Cortez to [wiki=3bd97db7eb0f4598c49db1a89aada877]Baja California[/wiki]. It is best known as one of the two terminus points for the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad (El Chepe) --- the magnificent train ride through the rugged Copper Canyon.

The most remarkable thing of Los Mochis is that is the only city in Mexico that can be reached by train, road, air and sea.

    • By plane

Los Mochis has a small airport (IATA:LMM) serving a limited range of destinations. Most flights are on small regional jets or turboprops. Direct flights to Los Mochis are available from:

      * Mexico City (MEX), 2 daily flights on Aeromexico.
      * Mazatlan (MZT), 1 daily flight.
      * Guadalajara (GDL), 1 daily flight.
      * Hermosillo (HMO), 1 daily flight on Aeromexico.
      * Chihuahua, (CUU) 1 flight every other day via Aero Pacifico

    • By train

The Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway[url=http://www.chepe.com.mx]]is one of the world's most spectacular train trips. The trip between Los Mochis and Chihuahua is about 16 hours each way. The train leaves each end point at 6 am, with travel speeds varying from 5 to 80 km/h depending on terrain . The first class and second class carriages of the train are essentially the same, except for their color (yellow - first, red - second), with the exact same amenities, so the exorbitant price of the first-class voyage (exactly double of what you pay in second class) seems to be a trap for careless money-loaded gringos.
GPS-coordinates for the train station Los Mochis are 25o45'40N 108o58'04W, about an hour walk from the city center.

The real scenery starts at El Fuerte. Stand on the western side and travel uphill to [[Creel[/url]] or [wiki=4ab02eb42d91b8e97216863c820a553b]Chihuahua[/wiki]. Hang out in the few open vestibules with your camera -- the uphill scenery is fairly splendid. On the downhill run, put yourself in the club (bar) car, where you can stretch out in a modicum of comfort. Consider splitting the long train journey in half by spending a night or two in [wiki=6ac4ce755313923a10a9ee15eaaf57a6]Creel[/wiki], for instance.

    • By car

You can arrive from five roads:
** The MEX-15 federal highway. Arrive from Navojoa at the north.
** MEX-15 if coming from Culiacan at south.
** Arrive from [wiki=db8f60e91841dad5b8e0d1c87fe2599b]El Fuerte[/wiki], old colonial town at the east of Los Mochis.
** Arrive from Topolobampo port a few miles to the west.
** Arrive from Ahome Village, the municipality seat, a few miles northwest.

    • By bus

Los Mochis, as a transport hub, is connected to all major cities and nearby towns.

Bus lines from major cities offer from low budget to luxury units. Towns in the area are served by smaller buses, but you will get surprised as most of them have air conditioner.

There is no central bus terminal, but most company's own terminals are located within walking distance to the downtown on Degollado street.

There are two places to catch the bus to El Fuerte (1 1/2-2 hr.). The first is at the Mercado Independencia at the corner of Avenida Independencia and Degollado. The other is at the corner of Cuauhtémoc and Prieto, near the Hotel América.

    • By boat

Ferry boats run between La Paz and the Topolobampo docks. The ferry transports both passengers and vehicles, though there has been talk in recent years of restricting RVs. Since privatization fares are increasing very rapidly, about 70 USD as of 03/10/2014 (salon class) plus another 60 bucks if you want to have your own bunk for this 6 to 7 hour trip. More accurate fares can be found at http://en.bajaferries.com/

Catch one of Sinaloa's iconic bandas at any one of the numerous night clubs in town (or even cruising Topolobampo in the back of a truck!). Ask around about the Forum, a large converted warehouse hosting bands during the weekend. Beer is 25 pesos (~$2) for Tecate or Tecate Light and dancing is free. No gringos spotted here.
