Both Uruapan and San Miguel de Allende were founded by the same Catholic Brother, Fray Juan de San Miguel. Uruapan was founded in 1533 and San Miguel de Allende in 1542. The task was to urbanize the Mesoamericans to make it easier to pacify, educate and control them. The leader of the Purhépecha people was chased down the mountain from Lake Pátzcuaro to Uruapan when the Spanish conquistadors first arrived.

    Parque Nacional de Uruapan

This incredible park consists of an old growth primeval forest on 47 acres in the middle of a city. President Lázaro Cárdenas bequeathed the Eduardo Ruiz estate to the Mexican people in 1938. It is truly amazing to see banana trees 75 feet (23m) tall. Parque Nacional is magic to your senses, especially with the mist filled air and the sounds of water rushing everywhere from an underground mountain river flowing out of the ground in the north end of the park. It is the second most visited national park in the entire nation.

There are 89 species of plants in Parque Nacional including wild orchids, flowering vines, huge ferns, and ficus. One can also observe parrots, hummingbirds, swallows, and woodpeckers. The Cupatitzio is indeed the river that sings.

    *Parque Ecológico "La Pinera"

This scenic park is located across from the Soriana supermarket on Av. Paseo de la Revolución. This park among the pine trees is perfect for a picnic or a family gathering. This delightful park and recreation center has a playground for children and has covered picnic pavilions and walking/biking trails. Take a hike and see the beautiful Rio Cupatitzio flow by down below the fragrant aromatic pine forest.

March 20, 2016, will be the 57th anniversary of the largest craft fair in Mexico held in Uruapan for two weeks. It begins with a food fair provided by Purhépecha women followed by a parade in native costumes (ropa típica) around Uruapan's downtown Plaza Morelos. Typically there are 1200 vendors selling their handmade wares and art at this two-week event.

The best two culinary days of the year are March 19th and 20th in the adjacent Plaza La Ranita which has a fountain and statue of a little frog when the Purhépecha women treat the public to authentic native food predating the Spanish conquest.
