Nosy Be means big island in the Malagasy language. It is the largest and busiest tourist resort in Madagascar.

Along the north-west coast lies a number of islands, the largest of which is Nosy Be. Marvelous beaches and coral reef in a protected national zone, natural lemur reserve, wonderful fishing, numerous nearby desert islands, all await the lucky traveller.
The unfortunately named Hell-Ville is the largest town and port of Nosy Be (Big Island) Three-quarters the size of Singapore, Nosy Be has 60,000 inhabitants, half of whom live in Hell-Ville, and the island is apparently the centre of what little tourism exists in Madagascar (only about 150,000 tourists visit the country each year).

French airline Air Austral seems to be the main provider of flights into nosy be, many of which go through Reunion and Nairobi on their way from paris.
Flights seem to be only 3 days a week and those days are subject to change. If you already have tickets booked and they decide to change the days that they fly on your tickets will be changed to the new days and you may or may not be notified of this change in schedule. It is advisable to check and recheck your ticket dates often as Air Austral seems to have some of the worst customer service and scheduling in the industry.

We are travelling in Madagascar for 10 weeks. Spending 4 weeks in Nosy Be. I write this comment only to warn travellers who intend to stay at the Hotel l´Éspardon in Ambatoloaka. We took a room at this Hotel and after hearing that a Croatian fellow was stolen 2500 € out of the locked safe we decided to move to a different place. There we met a German couple who were stolen shoes at the l´Éspardon and perhaps some money. I came here with 230 € cash and exactly 100 € were missing. Being at Ambatolokoa now for 3 ½ weeks we were talking also to locals who stated that it´s an open secret that things get stolen almost on a daily basis in this hotel. We can only assume that the operations manager who is an Indian is involved in this scam. So beware! Since the bungalows are pretty worn out and are as expensive as the other up-market hotels you may be taking your chances at the l´Espardon. It should be noted that this comment gets deleted by the management of the hotel who are aware of this thread. So far as fellow travellers report no changes have been made in regard of personnel.
*Fully crewed charters inclusive of catered meals, all activities, fuel. Fishing, snorkelling, scuba, kayaking. Explore deserted beaches and uninhabited islands. Nice and steady so sea sickness not a problem.
