Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport [url=http://www.mtfuji-shizuokaairport.jp/]]opened in June 2009 between Makinohara and Shimada. Startup carrier Fuji Dream Airlines [url=http://www.fujidreamairlines.com/[/url]]is based at the new airport. Flights are limited: there is no service to Tokyo, Nagoya or [[Kansai[/url]]; only a few international flights to Seoul and Shanghai plus domestic connections to [wiki=2b6dbcef587218cc0833879439473682]Kyushu[/wiki].
Buses run from Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport to the Shizuoka train station in about an hour at a cost of ¥1000. Interestingly, the airport was built right over the Tokaido Shinkansen line, but there is no train station serving the airport.
The nearest major airports are Haneda and Narita Airports in [wiki=62413a57c5e3dc51177995fa175d3286]Tokyo[/wiki], and Chubu International Airport in [wiki=10b22625bf8918f4fd3ae2f185bd44c8]Nagoya[/wiki]. It takes approximately two hours to reach Shizuoka from Haneda or Chubu on the fastest train services, a little longer from Narita.
The Tokaido Shinkansen runs one Hikari train per hour which stops at Shizuoka (and pauses for about 5 minutes while faster Nozomi trains barrel through the station). It is one hour from [wiki=62413a57c5e3dc51177995fa175d3286]Tokyo[/wiki], and 50 minutes from [wiki=10b22625bf8918f4fd3ae2f185bd44c8]Nagoya[/wiki] (both costing ¥6180), 90 minutes from [wiki=492379b2b8f7ac3f7cc8e0ca6254f4b1]Kyoto[/wiki] (¥9950), and 1 3/4 hours from Shin-Osaka (¥10580) using this train.
* All-stopping Kodama trains take a bit longer, and the same prices are charged for normal reservations. However, you can take advantage of the Puratto Kodama Ticket [url=http://www.jrtours.co.jp/kodama/](in Japanese)[/url], which offers a discount for Kodama services if you purchase at least one day in advance. You get a reserved seat and a free drink on board. With this ticket a trip to Shizuoka costs ¥4500 from Tokyo (90 minutes), ¥4500 from Nagoya (80 minutes), ¥7400 from Kyoto (2 1/4 hours) and ¥7900 from Shin-Osaka (2 1/2 hours). Kodama trains run once an hour from Shin-Osaka and Kyoto; twice per hour from the other cities. A few early-morning Kodama trains cannot be used with this ticket.
* Standard local trains from Tokyo take about 3 1/4 hours at a cost of ¥3260, requiring at least one change of trains at [wiki=d85da45c26324f4f41fa76244e83b8f8]Atami[/wiki].
*Wide View Fujikawa limited express trains make several daily round-trips to Shizuoka from [wiki=433c79805ce6786872b56d51ffd846b1]Kofu[/wiki] on the Chuo Line. The ride, in train cars with larger windows, costs ¥4300 and takes about 2 1/4 hours.
*[wiki=79a85f1262dd6e7b374eb01cd454a95a]Hamamatsu[/wiki] can be reached by either Shinkansen (30 minutes) or regular JR (1 1/2 hours).
You can ride all of these trains for free with the Japan Rail Pass.
JR Kanto Bus and JR Tokai Bus run frequent daytime services to Shizuoka on the Tomei Expressway between Tokyo and Nagoya. Shizuoka-bound Tokkyū buses from Tokyo reach the Shizuoka train station in about 3 hours, at a cost of ¥2850 one way (¥4500 round-trip). JR/Shizutetsu Sunpu Liner buses run several times per day from Shinjuku Station; this service also takes 3 hours and also costs ¥2850, but makes fewer stops.
Buses not terminating in Shizuoka will only stop at the Shizuoka interchange of the expressway. Local buses run frequently to Shizuoka station from another bus stop close to the interchange (15 minutes, ¥180).
