The town of Nachikatsuura has lost many of its citizens after Wakayama landslides. There are abandoned buildings in the area and for example some of the town's convenience stores and other businesses have died out. However, there are still many small enterprises left in the town for a tourist to enjoy. Most of the citizens are not used to seeing foreigners, but they are very friendly especially if you can speak some Japanese.

The town has many places for sleeping from big hotels to private homes providing lodging for travelers (minshuku).
*All the rooms are Japanese style, and so are the toilets. The hostel has it's own small onsen, that's open in the evenings 17-22. Breakfast (toast, fruit and coffee) is available. The staff is very friendly and eager to help you to get around the area. Knowing some Japanese helps a lot, since the staff doesn't speak much English. The hostel is also planning to close soon, when the owner retires.
*Nice western type hotel. Popular among women. Prices include breakfast.
