Bardolino lies on the south east shore of Lake Garda, once a fishing village it has grown as tourist resort popular with north European visitors. Bardolino is linked by a lakeside path with its neighbours Garda town and Lazise. Traditionally the a large majority of tourists visiting the area were German or Austrian, but in recent years with more direct flight connections to Verona and budget airline Ryanair serving Bergamo the proportion of visitors from other north European countries especially the UK and Ireland has greatly increased.
In recent years the number of tourists from the USA, former USSR and other Eastern European nations has also risen.
Relaxed and relatively uncrowded Bardolino with its excellent transport links is a good base for the first time visitor to Lake Garda.

All people speak Italian as a first language but basic English has increased greatly in recent years. The area is very popular with tourists from northern Europe and generally most people in tourist areas also speak fluent German.

As with anywhere in the world, it is good manners to learn how to say goodbye, hello, please, thank you etc. in [wiki=f84cd22f43e2051737f070f2651fb01f]Italian[/wiki].

As with other towns on the southern part of Lake Garda, Bardolino enjoys a particularly pleasant climate, in the summer months characterised by slightly hazy sunshine and gentle warm breezes. Rain storms do occur and while infrequent can spectacular.

If taking a day trip to the Dolomites remember to take a warm jacket as even in mid summer it will be cold at higher altitude.

The most convenient airport for travel to Bardolino is Verona "Valerio Catullo" Airport (IATA Code VRN) formerly known as Villafranca. transfer time by tour operator's coach is usually less than 40 minutes.

Arriving from Verona Catullo airport there is a direct bus service to Bardolino, running hourly, but from early June to early September only.

Alternatively you could check with your hotel as many can arrange reasonably priced transfers, sometimes these are free for stays of 7 days or more.

Bardolino has a very good bus service and is also one of the best positioned towns on the lake for travelling by ferry.

Buses run regularly connecting Bardolino with Verona, Peschiera, Garda and towns inbetween.

There is also a bus to Malcesine in the north of the lake

Unfortunately since new services began operating in June 2014 there is no direct bus to Riva del Garda. You can however get a bus direct from nearby Garda.

As with most resorts in the southern part of the lake, Bardolino may be more suited to visitors with mobility or general fitness problems than the resorts in the northern part of the lake which cling onto mountain sides and have steeper inclines.

Bardolino is within easy travel to Gardaland and the other theme and aqua parks by public transport.
  • filter_dramaLakeside Markets
Lakeside Markets The towns all around the lake host weekly markets. Each town has a market day with the market operating from around 07:30to 13:00. In many towns this does involve some road closures.
The markets are tremedous fun but don't expect massive bargains. In Bardolino the market arrives on Thursday morning and stretches for about 1km along the lakeside promenade between via Mirabello, next to the Bellevue Hotel, to Riva Cornicello.
Market Days: Lazise Wednesday, Bardolino Thursday, Garda town Friday.

This is not an exhaustive list but if based in Bardolino these are probably the most practical to visit.
  • filter_dramaLakeside Path
In the south eastern part of the lake the towns of Garda, Bardolino, Lazise and Peschiera del Garda are linked by a lakeside path. As the towns are also connected by ferry this gives the opportunity to combine walking with a ferry trip. Garda is roughly a 45 minute stroll to the north along a good well surfaced path. The path to Lasize is well surfaced as far as Cisano, roughly 15/20 minutes walk and ideal for a refreshment stop. From Cisano the path is a slightly rougher surface but still quite level for most of the way to Lazise, this section takes around 45/50 minutes. Beyond Lasize the path becomes rougher underfoot in places and it will take just over 2 hours to reach the centre of Peschiera del Garda.
The hamlet of Cisano is located roughly halfway betwenn Bardolino and Lazise and makes a convenient point to pause for a cool drink and something to eat.

In the traditional streets clustered around the harbour Bardolino has an excellent selection of shops selling shoes, hand bags, ceramics, wines,Olive Oil, cheese and other local products and tourist goods.
See also section on the Thursday morning lakeside market.

Bardolino has two supermarkets the "Cristina" and a Lidl which are located 0.5km south of the town centre on the main road lakeside SR249 the Via Santa Cristina.

As in anywhere in Italy expect the standard of food to be very high however because of the popularity of the Lake Garda area with German speaking tourists and the history of Austrian rule hotel and restaurant menus are slanted towards Austrian/German cusine.

Most hotels in northern Italy operate on a half-board basis.
Hotel breakfast are continental buffet style, a selection fruits yoghurt and cereal and also a selection of sweet biscuits and pastries. In some hotels a toaster is provided for the guests to use. Some hotels will have a waiter on duty to cook eggs.

Hotel evening meals generally take the form: salad buffet, entre, fish, main and dessert.
Some hotels expect the guests to pre-order courses 24 hours in advance.

If going on a long ferry or coach journey I recommend you take pack lunch.
For a small charge many hotels will provide an excellent pack lunch. Some smaller hotels may offer one free pack lunch per week as part of a deal with package holiday company.
Usually a pack lunch will contain water, fruit juice, rolls with Parma ham, cheese and some type of fruit.
