Best way in is the ferry from Cochin to Vypeen Island and then a local bus (18 Rps) to Cherai Junction. From there it is an auto-rickshaw (20 Rps) to the beach. Alternative is an auto-rickshaw from the ferry for about 100 Rps. There are also buses from Ernakulam to Cherai Junction.

If you are travelling by road from Trisur, the best option is to get to Kodangalur, Poovar and then Cherai. If you are travelling by road from Ernakulam, then the best choice is to take the NH to Poovar and then take the SH to Cherai

The place is small enough to walk round.

Cherai junction is the closest town which is a long walk (2 km.) (30-50 mins) or a rickshaw ride. There is the occasional bus to the beach but they are not that regular.

Walking the road will give you a feel for a real Kerala village.

There is a very simple beach resort with just a few restaurants that is backed by a large lagoon. It is possible to take rides on the lagoon otherwise the main activities are around the beach.

Three or four restaurants around plus a couple of cafes.

If you are looking for cheap Kerala-style options, you can find them at Cherai Junction. There are quite a few of them that you can try.

Coconut Lounge at the main beach near the Mahendra facility is run by a European couple with varieties of Indian (North and South) and European Fusion food in a peaceful, sea-watching atmosphere.

    * The closet pure vegetarian restaurant is at North Parur 3 km away from Cherai Town next to Reliance super market where you can do all your purchases too, with ample parking. Sukh Saagar the veg restaurant cater to all types of South Indian specialties and very soon you will have north Indian and Chinese dishes too

There is a government-approved liquor shop just on the way from Cherai beach to Cherai Junction. You will be required to stand in a line to first pay for your liquor and then to receive it from an other counter. The range of liquor is quite decent and the store is well stocked.

There is no ladies' queue. They can avoid the queue and go straight to the counter with the money and get the liquor.

There are quite a few non alcoholic options near Cheari beach and Cherai Junction. Coconut Lagoon European Indian Fusion Restaurant is one of them who has non-alcoholic drinks.

    Les 3 Elephants
The best eco-friendly resort is Les 3 elephants at Cherai beach owned and managed by a French family. They have a wonderful restaurant in a very nice ambiance catering mouth-watering French and Indian food for the residents and the tourists. Their website is www.3elephants.in. 11 Well maintained bungalows with the waterfront gives you superb early morning and evening views.

    *Sukh Saagar Veg Restaurant
The closet pure vegetarian restaurant is at North Parur 3 km away from Cherai Town next to Reliance super market where you can do all your purchases too, with ample parking. Sukh Saagar the veg restaurant cater all types of South Indian specialties and very soon you will have north Indian and Chinese dishes too.

*Coconut Lagoon European Fusion Restaurant Cherai beac @ Arabian Sea.
At the Cherai Beach this restaurant will take care of your needs in a nice ambiance with a view to the Arabian Sea.

*Secluded luxury cottages, sumptuously appointed executive suites and banquet areas set on an elegant landscape dotted with palms and tropical plants around a large pond in the middle. Nestled between the Cherai beach and lagoon, serenity is the order of the day. Lulled by the hush of the lagoon, the calls of tropical birds, canoes sending soft ripples through the water, the muttered voices of fishermen and in the background the muted growl of the sea, the hiss of waves descending on the beach - you are in the realm of forces primal and sensual.

*The is the most upmarket place with rooms starting at 2500 Rps. The place is a set of bungalows set around inlets from the lagoon. There are quite a few insects around (a man comes around to fumigate the rooms at sunset). The place tries to be an upmarket resort but the rooms are a little too basic for that. The management of the place is also very poor.

There are a couple of other options - a small resort as you come in on the lagoon - and a newish hotel (2007) on the north part of the beach.
