Road: From Jakarta, Jalan Lenteng Agung and Jalan Raya Bogor are the two main roads leading to Depok. An alternative is to take the toll road and exit for Depok. If you are heading for Depok Central, Jalan Lenteng Agung is the better alternative as it links up with Jalan Margonda Raya and takes you to two of the main shopping centres, Depok Town Square (DETOS) and Margo City. These roads are often very congested in the morning and in the afternoon, as are most roads and streets in Jakarta.
Train: The other way to get into Depok is to take the Bogor line (Red Line if you are coming from Jakarta Kota Station, or Orange Line if you are coming from Jatinegara Station). Depok has five stations: [Jakarta] [Bogor]. KA Commuter Jabodetabek serves and stop at these stations. Passenger can buy ticket at the manned-counter; with the new ticketing system, there are two types of ticket available, the single-trip card (price vary) and multiple trip card (IDR 50.000; IDR 30.000 credit). The new fare counting system is called 'Progressive Fares'. It depends on number of station passed, and applied on commuter class in all line. The first five stations passed will be charged IDR 2000 and every next three stations passed will be charged IDR 500. Passanger also can use their FLAZZ Card (Prepayment card issued by Bank BCA) to board and alight the trains (it also can be used for Trans-Jakarta Bus Rapid Transit). It takes around 30 to 90 minutes from Jakarta to Depok, depending on from where in Jakarta you are coming from and where in Depok you are going to. Don't expect a seat on the train at the peak hours (5.00-9.00 AM heading towards Jakarta and 4.00-22.00 heading towards Bogor). Most people stand - and those sitting, are mostly women, children and elderly.
Bus: DAMRI: The nearest airport bus (DAMRI) pickup points are Pasar Minggu, in South Jakarta, and Kampung Rambutan bus terminal, in East Jakarta. Take the 129 microlet to Pasar Minggu or the 112 microlet to Kampung Rambutan.
The overcrowded brown and purple Debora (pronounced de-bora) bus service
connects Depok with South Jakarta.
Taxi: Alternatively, you can always travel by taxi, which you can easily find in Jalan Margonda Raya, or else order a taxi by phone. Blue Bird and Taxiku taxi companies, who are both reliable, have their depots in Depok. Express is another reliable company. A typical fare from Blok M in South Jakarta to Central Depok would be about Rp 80,000, from Kota in Central Jakarta, about Rp 120,000, and from the airport to Central Depok, about Rp 200,000.

The usual means of public transportation in Depok are microlet (vans) and angkot (minibuses) which ply Jl. Margonda Raya and some other main roads. The price is fixed at Rp 3,500 and Rp 2000 respectively.
There are also numerous ojeks (motorcycle taxis) on many street corners in Depok. Agree on the price before getting on the ojek. Most fares are in the range of Rp 5 to 20,000.

Cycling, walking and jogging at the University of Indonesia Campus are another recreational activities during weekend in Depok. Many locals go there especially on Sunday. Free market is available in this moment close to university's fence where you can buy cheap things from food to CDs, and from clothes to utensils.

At the end of the year, it's the durian season; durian is a tropical fruit sold by locals along the road from Depok to Bogor. Durians here are cheap and good enough with price ranging from Rp 5,000 - Rp 30,000. Don't hesitate to bargain the price and tell them that you only pay a good one. The seller will choose the fruit for you, open a small hole and take a little fruit for you to taste. If you're satisfied with the taste, they will open the whole fruit for you if you want to finish the fruit in their place.

Both western and local food are readily available in Depok. Indonesian food is available everywhere and is usually spicy to hot. If you have a very sensitive mouth, ask for less chili, or no chili ("Sidikat sidkat cabe" or "Bukan cabe"). Western food is also available in the large food courts, but be adventerous - Indonesian food is generally delicious.
The two largest shopping centres of DETOS (Depok Town Square) and Margo City have large and varied food courts. A number of other shopping centres also have good food courts.
Depok has two main roads connecting north and south regions. They are Jl Raya Bogor and Jl Margonda. There are many restaurants along these roads with various cuisine from the various regions of Indonesia.
A cheap meal may be found in a student cafe, either in a university or in an area close by a university. UI (University of Indonesia) has a student-run, learning restaurant of very high quality.
Lawson, which combines Japanese food with mini-mart and WiFi has recently come to Depok and is proving popular, especially with younger middle class Indonesians and students.
The typical price of a meal in Depok is similiar to Jakarta prices, but sometimes slightly lower. Typical prices vary from about Rp 6,000 for street food, to Rp 15,000 in local restaurant, to Rp 30,000 in a etc to Rp 50,000 for an good restaurant.

Alcohol is not so freely available in Depok. There are no clubs or pubs selling alcohol, nor is alcohol sold in major supermarkets. There are however, two small liquor stores in Depok; both are near the entrance of the BRIMOB police baracks. Beer can be purchased with meals in some restaurants in the shopping malls.
Like other city in West Java province, Depok has similar local drinks. The variety of options are young coconut water (coconut milk) with ice and palm sugar, mixed chunk fruit and jelly with ice, blended fruit with ice. They are refreshing for a really hot day.
If you are concerned about all the sugar in such a drink, you can simply order coconut water (coconut milk) without any additives. The top is cut off the coconuy and a straw inserted into the freshly opened coconut. This is very refreshing and very nutritious.
Most drink vendors buy ice cubes from a market and bring them by motor bike or tricycle. Ice cubes are handled carelessly and the spread of bacteria is quite possible; caution (and possibly anti-diarrheal medicine) should be taken!! Maybe it is better not to have ice.

Along Margonda road, there are only 2 hotels available. They're 3 stars hotel named "Bumi Wiyata Hotel" and "Wisma Makara" owned by University of Indonesia. Standard room in Bumi Wiyata is Rp 450,000 and the cheapest room in Wisma Makara is Rp 225,000.
Bumi Wiyata located in the main road and close to amenity whereas Wisma Makara located within University and a little bit far from main road. Choose Wisma Makara if peaceful and simplicity are your preference.
For longer-term staying, the Margonda Residence Apartments, located on Margonda Raya is quite useful. It costs between IDR 1,350,000 to IDR 1,700,000 per month for a studio room, with a minimum contract of three months. As yet, it is the only apartment in Depok although others are being built. It is across the road from Universitas Indonesia, on the north part of the city, and thus is safe from much of the traffic jam in the city (although one still has to negotiate the traffic on the Jakarta side).

From Depok, there are only three options: One can return to Jakarta, or head south and travel to Bogor and/or Puncak.
There are three routes to Bogor: The Tol (toll road), Jalan Bogor Raya and Jalan Margonda.
To go to Puncak, take the Tol to Bogor, then exit to the left (the east) and follow the road as it winds up to Puncak and beyond.
