Castleton is a fairly small village, so it is easy enough to get around on foot, although narrow pavements in certain areas mean attention should be paid to traffic.

It is home to the only Blue John mine in the world as well as four major caves/caverns which tourists can visit (Speedwell, Treak Cliff, Blue John and Peak). Each has a very different feel, from the natural splendor of Peak Cavern to the disconcerting underground river trip (and well-rehearsed guides' patter) of Speedwell.

Castleton is surrounded on 3 sides by hills, making it an ideal location for hillwalking. Mam Tor is a fairly easy hike and on a good weather day, views of Castleton and the other villages of the Hope Valley can be had from the summit. If wanting a shorter uphill walk, it is worth visiting Peveril Castle, a medieval castle from which the village gets its name, built by the son of William the Conqueror.

There is a small museum/visitor center in the village (free entry) which details some of the local history of the area. There are plenty of tourist shops, cafes/tearooms and several pubs in the village.

Many of the above pubs also offer rooms, in addition to this there are numerous B&Bs. It's reccommended you research and book these in advance. There are also camping and caravan sites nearby.

The nearby villages of Hope, Edale, Bradwell and Hathersage are all close by (all of which except Edale are accessible by bus). If looking for a city, [wiki=30d85fa7d563a95914f4d31958e9e3fa]Sheffield[/wiki], one of the UK's largest cities, famous for it's industry, culture and music is a 20-25 minute drive away or a 30 minute ride away on the 272 bus.
