The town offers a relaxed, quaint atmosphere. Beaumaris is the perfect getaway for all ages. Singles, married couples, and families can all find fun affordable activities for a day or even a week of relaxation and bonding time. Beaumaris does not have many package vacations so you can truly create your own personalized vacations like no other in the world. Make sure to bring cool weather clothes over lighter layers. This way you can be comfortable no matter what the temperature. Also, bring a camera because you will want to remember this trip.
    • History

Beaumaris was built by the English along with the castle. King Edward I began construction on this castle in 1295. French builders called the castle beaux marais meaning "beautiful marsh" since the castle was built on a marsh foundation. This is one of the largest fortresses in Wales and the last created by King Edward I. However, construction was never completed and only saw a little combat during the 17th century Civil War. Had it been finished it was fixed to be one of the grandest ever built.(1,2)

    • Climate

The Gulf Stream makes the UK's winters relatively mild.(4) The best times to head to Beaumaris are in the autumn and spring to avoid the summer crowds. Autumn and spring temperatures range from the high 60°F and the low 40°F.(3)

Bicycle- best way to get around town when not on foot
*Foot- most attractions can be walked to from your hotel as the town is relatively small.
*Car- car services can be called for attractions that cannot be reached by the previous two forms of transportation.

The castle is beautiful, even though it is unfinished. One can walk across the bridge to gain entry, situated atop a moat of swans. From there one can venture through the finished parts of the walls or explore the eroded cut outs. It's best to go on a sunny day when the light comes through all the little crevasse. The middle of the castle is a huge plot of grass where people can sit and children can run around. This is a very kid friendly castle but some of the wall-walks may be unsuitable for young children. Very limited disabled access. During the summer months the castle is host to a number of special events (see Cadw website for details of annual programme) and also a number of evening concerts by Beaumaris band and other music and theatre groups.

*Courthouse from 1614- Courthouse held trials for some of Anglesey's most nefarious crimnals. People can learn how the court worked back in 1614 as well as see some of the artifacts a Judge would have used.(5) A cool place for people of all ages to enjoy what would have happened to them if they were a criminal, lawyer, judge, or part of a jury in the 1600's. Follow up with visit to gaol, ask for combined ticket at courthouse.

*Construction on the parish church of SS Mary and Nicolas was commenced back in the 14th century at the same time as the castle and town walls but has been subject to much renovation since, most recently in the 1950s when the tower was strengthened. The church is open during the day to wonder round and access is via the south door. Just inside this door you will find the tomb of Princess Joan, wife of Llywelyn the Great and illegitimate daughter of King John of England. There is also a stand with information leaflets which you can follow as a 'guided tour' of the church. Be warned, the church yard gates are locked at about 17:00 each day.
*Cruises from Beaumaris to Puffin Island. Recently under new management who are revamping the cruise schedule, details via their Facebook page (search Cerismar).
*Old gaol for the county of Anglesey, designed by Joseph Hansom and opened in 1832. During its years as a gaol was the scene of two executions, both public from the gallows still visible high on east-facing wall. Following closure as gaol, was home to the town's police station and then health centre before opening as a museum. Home to the last working treadmill for those under sentence of hard labour. Takes about an hour to visit. Joint tickets available with courthouse.
