Founded in 1694, Tiverton has grown from its origins as a farming community into a picturesque summer resort and residential suburb. The town was originally incorporated as a part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1746 the final settlement of a long colonial boundary dispute between Rhode Island and Massachusetts annexed Tiverton to Rhode Island by Royal Decree, along with bordering towns along the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay: Barrington, Bristol and Little Compton along with the town of Cumberland, to the north of Providence. Tiverton was then incorporated as a town of Rhode Island in 1747. Until its annex, Tiverton controlled the area of East Freetown, Massachusetts as an outpost.
During the Revolutionary War men from the Tiverton outpost took part in the Battle of Freetown, on May 25, 1778. For about three years, from December 1776 to late 1779, Rhode Island proper (also known as Aquidneck Island, historically) was occupied by the British. During this time Tiverton became a refuge for Americans fleeing the occupation, a mustering place for Colonial forces gathering to drive away the British. The occupying forces eventually withdrew strategically, as General Clinton marshalled his forces for the 1780 British invasion of South Carolina.
In its early days, Tiverton was chiefly a farming community, with some fishing and boat construction. Until 1900 the manufacture of menhaden oil, a fish derivative, was one of the town’s primary industrial pursuits. Cotton and woolen mills were established as early as 1811, when Colonel Joseph Durfee built a spinning mill at Cook Pond in what is now the city of Fall River, Massachusetts.
In 1856, the northern part of the town separated from Tiverton and was re-named Fall River, Rhode Island by the Rhode Island General Assembly. Then, on March 1, 1862, in a decision made by the United States Supreme Court, Fall River was made part of Massachusetts, and the state boundary placed in its current location along State Avenue.
Mark's Stadium is a former soccer stadium located in North Tiverton, Rhode Island. During the 1920s and early 1930s it was the home of Fall River Marksmen, one of the era’s most successful soccer teams. It is one of the earliest examples of a soccer-specific stadium in the United States. After the demise of the Marksmen, the stadium was used as a home ground by other local teams, most notably Fall River F.C. and Ponta Delgada S.C..

Tiverton rests on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, separated from Aquidneck Island (also known as the Island of Rhode Island) by the Sakonnet River. The area is disconnected from the rest of the state of Rhode Island by the Narragansett Bay. You can also reach Tiverton by traveling west of the town of Westport and south of the city of Fall River located in Massachusetts.

Chase-Cory House, 3908 Main Rd., Tiverton, RI 02878 +1 401 624-2096. Open: May-September, 2pm - 4:30pm. Located in Tiverton’s 4-Corners National Register Historic District, this historical building hosts special exhibits throughout the season. Built in the late 17th or early 18th century and now owned by the Tiverton Historical Society, this 3/4 cape with gambrel roof was home to whaling captains and their families, descendants of one of the first twenty seven freemen listed as original residents of Tiverton. The house and grounds retain many of the original features of a colonial farm, including a corn-crib and wash house.
*Fort Barton, Highland Road, +1 401 625-6700. Open: year round, sunrise to sunset. An authentic Revolutionary War fortification, Fort Barton was the troop staging area for the invasion of Aquidneck Island and Newport and, eventually, the Battle of Rhode Island in 1778. The park contains three miles of trails and an observation tower, crowning the park at 30 feet high and offering panoramic views of the Sakonnet River, Mount Hope Bay, and the Portsmouth and Bristol shorelines. The vast trails are well maintained, and carefully constructed stairs allow easy travel up and over steep hills. Deep into the trail network, hikers will find a quiet path beside a stream.
*Four Corners Arts Center, 3852 Main Road, +1 401 624-2600, [http://www.tivertonfourcorners.com/artscenter/]. Built in about 1800, the Four Corners Arts Center is home to the historic Soule-Seabury House and contains over an acre of landscaped grounds used for exhibits, concerts, outdoor dance, sculpture, theater, and special events.
*Ruecker Wildlife Refuge, Seapowet Ave., +1 401 949-5454. Open: daily, sunrise to sunset. Over 48 acres and wound through with 1.5 miles of trail, this refuge is home to a variety of animal and plant life. Parceled with woods and salt marshes, and offers fine views of the Sakonnet River. Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, and Glossy Ibis are among the birds that frequent the marsh. Jack's Island, a peninsula that extends into the Sakonnet River, is home to breeding Ospreys.
*The library, the second oldest in Newport County, is the smaller of the two libraries in Tiverton. It is an interesting location to stop by and visit in that it is an extremely small space and only needs two staff members to run. Although it is open only twice a week, it is a place to visit if you are near Four Corners.

For nature lovers, Weetamoo Woods (named after an Indian Squaw Sachem) offers the perfect place to observe the beauty of the outdoors and learn a little history. While exploring one or more of the four trails this 450 acre preserve has to offer, you can visit the remains of the Borden Sawmill that was built back in the 18th century. The site also includes the ruins of mill worker homes and cellar holes, with gardens still apparent. *Roseland Acres is one of the only horse friendly areas in Tiverton that is open to the public. While there are many other locations in Tiverton housing horses, they are all either privately owned or for boarding purposes only. Roseland Acres, located in the southern part of the town near the Historical Tiverton Four Corners, is a family owned facility that offers horseback riding lessons (with an indoor ring), summer camps, and one-to-two hour trail rides.
*A tranquil, relaxing spot to enjoy yourself and the sights of Narragansett Bay. Sea birds build their nests along the rocky shoreline. Offers a candid view of the Newport Bridge. You can also enjoy a view of the Portsmouth shoreline and the Sakonnet River. Fogland also provides an excellent windsurfing area. Nearby Grinnell's Beach is a great family beach, and has a miniature park right in the sand. The Seapowet Marsh and Point Fishing Area has various coastal habitats and are popular for shellfishing. Shopping can be enjoyed at the Grand Central Shopping Center.
*Town Farm is the major recreational area in Tiverton. During the spring, summer and fall you can often find parents and their children relaxing here. Town Farm has a 1/3 mile track that circles two baseball fields and a grass area. On each side is a playground, one with slides and one with swing-sets. Behind the swing-sets is the tennis court, which can hold four games at a time. Behind the entire area is a large soccer field, which is often the home of practices and games, and another baseball field.
*Grinnell's is a small family beach located on the Main Road in Tiverton. With it's shore on the Sakonnet River, it has lifegaurds, a playground, hiking and walking trails, fishing spots, picnic tables, benches, and parking. The shore is rocky so water shoes are recommended. There is no concession stand however, but the beach is not too far from the popular Gray's Ice Cream shop. No dogs allowed.
*Located next to Weetamoo Woods, Pardon Gray is a 230 acre nature preserve. It has plenty of walking and hiking trails, with maps available at the entrance. You can to choose from varied terrains; there are a number of dog and family friendly walks to chose from as well as some for the more seasoned hiker. All of the trails are marked with color coded arrows to keep you on course and many take you pass various historical landmarks (also marked on the map). There is no hunting allowed on this preserve however, bikes and horses are permitted.
*The Butterfly Zoo of Tiverton was named Best of Rhode Island 2011 attraction by Yankee Magazine and is home to a wide variety of butterflies from all over the world. White monarchs, common buckeyes, and chine yellow snowtails are a few of the glorious creatures that you can find fluttering around the farm. Other than admiring the magnificent flying insects the zoo offers mounted butterflies for purchase.
*The Donovan Gallery is located at Tiverton Four Corners and offers many forms of art including watercolors, oils, pastels, etchings, monotypes, and limited edition prints. All of the art in the gallery is framed professionally and the frame is included with purchased items.

Every year, around the end of May, come and enjoy a wid variety of everything flower, herb, and gardening! An annual tradition of the town, gardening enthusiasts can come together, trade gardening secrets, share plants and prized flowers, all in the wonderful setting of the Soule-Seabury House.
*For 30+ years Ferguson & D'Arruda have been prominent figures in the Antique business, starting way back with a little shop in Adamsville. Although they travel the state, they never fail to return home to host the annual Antique Festival. You can find odds and ends, trinquets, and knick-knacks, anything and everything antique. For those who like to browse through history, be sure to stop by towards the beginning of July!
*The Tiverton Art festival is a good event for those with an interest in the arts. At the height of the New England summer, mid-July, this town introduces their annual festival of the arts, close to the beautiful meeting house on main road. With the work of artists from near and far, you can enjoy a day of expression through color and perspective. A joyous occasion to celebrate the arts!

*The Boat House is the quintessential seafood spot. Located within the gates of the Villages on Mount Hope Bay condominium complex, enjoy outdoor and indoor seating with picturesque views of the Sakonnet River and as you sample some of classic New England seafood. The cuisine boasts a menu of fresh seafood and local produce, taking its cue from the picturesque backdrop of the Sakonnet River.
*Evelyn’s Drive-In, 2335 Main Road,+1 401 624-3100. Summer, Monday-Thursday 11:30am - 8:30pm, Friday-Sunday 11:30am - 9:00pm. Evelyn’s is the local clam shack, serving classic seafood dishes, such as batter-fried belly clams, clam cakes, and chowder. Located on the water at Nanaquaket Pond, Evelyn’s Drive-In offers patio seating that provides its customers with a waterside view while they eat. Evelyn's Drive-In was featured on the Food Network's television show "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" for its exceptional food.

*Gray’s Ice Cream, 16 East Road, +1 401 624-4500. Kitchen open 6:30am - 8pm. Located at Historic Tiverton Four Corners, Gray’s is an award-winning ice cream shop, voted Best in Rhode Island, that serves homemade ice cream in over 40 different flavors, including seasonal flavors such as pumpkin and eggnog.
*Little Bear Lounge is a quiet, cozy place to go for a home-style breakfast to start your day. It has been newly renovated and is available for grabbing a drink after hours.
*Family Ties is a good restaurant breakfast or lunch. The portions are generous for the price and the taste is homemade.
*The Provender is located at Four Corners, and has been open since 1982. They offer fresh baked bread daily, along with muffins, croissants, cookies, desserts, soups, and sandwiches.
*The Moose Cafe is a little place to stop in for a variety of snacks or light meals. This quaint little shop offers everything from coffee and espresso drinks to over 300 flavors of gourmet soft serve ice cream. They also offer homemade treats such as "Moose Bars" and handmade ice cream cakes. This is a summer favorite for those who prefer soft serve ice cream over the traditional hard. Whether you're looking to have an informal lunch with friends by this cafe's fireplace, or want to take your family out for ice cream and sit at one of their outside patio tables, the Moose Cafe has something to offer you.
*Nonni's Restaurant and Pasta Shop is a fairly new addition to the Tiverton restaurant scene. It operates as both a full restaurant and pasta shop allowing customers to go in daily and purchase a variety of fresh homemade pastas and sauces. Their menu contains items such as pizzas, salads, fresh baked breads, pastas with sauce, and their signature entrees. Nonni's also has a fully stocked bar with different varieties of beer, wine and other spirits.
*Coastal Roasters the Tiverton spot for true coffee enthusiasts. This seaside coffee shop is a good place to stop in while on a morning stroll along the water or just on your way to work. Using beans including Sakonnet Area, The Americas, Africa/Arabia, Indonesia and various Islands, Coastal Roasters ensures that the beans are roasted fresh daily and done so in small batches to ensure quality. The crew at Coastal Roasters offers the option to order coffee beans online and have a coffee of the month club as well.
*Not far from Coastal Roasters and Evelyn's Drive-In, the Black Goose Cafe is also a quaint waterside venue. The Black Goose Cafe offers items such as artisan paninis, bagels, pastries and a variety of hot and cold drinks. When you visit the Black Goose Cafe you can go to the front counter and order the items of your choosing, and then when you pick your table (which you can choose from indoor and outdoor seating) they'll bring your selection right over to you. The Black Goose Cafe is an ideal location to sit and enjoy a light meal while watching the sunset on the water.
*The Moulin Rouge is Tiverton's only French restaurant. This spot offers French Cuisine in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. The entrée prices range from about $15-$25.
*Sabitado's is the local pizza eatery. You can dine in or take-out pizzas, grinders, wraps, pasta, salads, and true to Rhode Island form, seafood.
*Found at the corner of Brayton and Crandall Rd., Wally's is one of the only taverns in Tiverton. A relatively new addition, the sports-themed Wally's has become known for not just its pub food, but its fish and chips, pasta dishes, and desserts. This tavern has even been featured on the local news due to the fact that it was renamed after the owner's brother, who was a veteran and an avid Patriots fan. The fact that the owner built Wally's by hand adds to the charm of the tap house.
