Montbéliard is a relatively small city home to ca. 30,000 inhabitants lying in the center of a broader urban area of about 100,000. It is only 20km away from the Belfort area which is roughly of the same size, and 13km from Switzerland (Jura canton).

While not an important touristic spot it has a small and pleasant old town featuring a few interesting sights, including the castle of the Dukes of Württemberg and the oldest protestant church in France (designed by german architect Heinrich Schickhardt - Montbéliard being part of the Holy Roman Empire at that time).

The industrial past and present of Montbéliard is particularly obvious with the huge manufacturing plant of the Peugeot automobile company welcoming you at the gates of town. The sprawling suburbs of small workers' houses compared to the rather small historical center reflect this industrial tendency.

For nature enthusiast, it is avantageously located midway between the Vosges and the Jura mountains which are hiking and cross-country skiing paradises. The "euroveloroute 6" passes nearby the city center and - when the weather allows - brings quite a few cyclists cyclists in town for a night stopover.

    By car

Exit 8 on the A36 highway, which is an important link between northern and southern Europe (through the Rhine - Rhone corridor).

    By train

Montbéliard is served by the high-speed train "TGV" from Paris, southern France (via Lyon), Frankfurt (via Strasbourg), Zürich (via Basel). High-speed trains stop at the Belfort-Montbéliard TGV station located 20km from Montbéliard. From there, you can hop on a shuttle bus to Montbéliard (€1.5), Belfort or Delle (with train connections to Switzerland via Delémont. Alternatively you can take a cab, or park your own car at the wide but rather expensive parking lot (€20 for a week-end).

In the city center is still to be found the older Montbéliard station which is still in use primarily for regional "TER" trains, but also night trains and some slower trains. Note that the newspaper kiosk in the station is open on sundays.

    By plane

Basel-Mulhouse Euroairport (offering convenient low-cost flights to many european destinations) is accessible by car in 50 minutes, while Zürich airport and Strasbourg airport are a mere 2 hours away.

As of now the Euroairport is not served by rail (in project though), but you may catch a shuttle bus to Saint-Louis or Basel from where you can take connecting trains (fast or slow depending on your budget and time constraints) to Montbéliard station or Belfort-Montbéliard TGV station. Note that connections between the trains are not optimized and that you'll need an average of 2 hours to do that.

    By boat

It is possible to sail from Rotterdam in The Netherlands to the mediterranean see using the Rhine-Rhone channel flowing through the city center. There is a tiny marine right behind the parc "Près-de-la-Rose".

    By bike

The bicycle lanes linking Montbéliard to Besançon, Belfort or Mulhouse are nearly complete, so you can take enjoyable rides along the rivers/channels in any direction.

Montbéliard is a convenient stop on the euroveloroute 6 from Nantes to Budapest.

The old town is very small and can be walked across in less than 10 minutes.

To reach any other place in the conurbation, you can use the CTPM network which operates public buses linking most of the suburbs. Tickets can be bought onboard or in most kiosks, and cost €1.10 for a single journey (€0.90 when bought by 10).

Bicycles can be hired in the city center (get information at the tourist office). There is an extensive and convenient network of bicycle lanes within the conurbation, so you are encouraged to use this healthy and environmental friendly mode of transportation!

Tandoori Place, 40 Rue Georges Clemenceau. Lunch and dinner, open sunday night. A very new indo-pakistanese fast food (tandoori chicken, snacks, veg and meet curries, sweets,...). Naans and chicken are baked in a real tandoor oven!
