Papallacta is located 67 km (40 mi) east of [wiki=aadcd2017119cf69f6e31dcb24e52a02]Quito[/wiki] on the route taken in 1542 by Francisco de Orellana. It crosses over the Andes through beautiful valleys on each side. Find a bus from [wiki=aadcd2017119cf69f6e31dcb24e52a02]Quito[/wiki] to [wiki=8c36bddccabb02fa4acdc548ff2f07df]Baeza[/wiki] or [wiki=0848d10a4c82a068a907a0ba9e418c15]Tena[/wiki] and tell the bus driver/cashier that you want to get off in Papallacta. You can take the bus from the Supermaxi stop in Cumbaya (amongst other places), and there is about one every hour during the day and it costs about $2.5. It's a windy uphill road and the buses stop a lot and hence the journey takes about 2 hours.

The thermal baths and the Reserva Ecologica Cayambe-Coca are the leading reasons to visit Papallacta. Otherwise, there aren't too many activities in this little town on the side of the hill.

The beautiful Reserva Ecologica Cayambe-Coca presents miles of lakes and trails in a preserved and secluded setting. Access/camping/fishing fees were $5 in 2007. This reserve receives support from The Nature Conservancy, USAID, Parks in Peril and Rumicocha Ecological Foundation. The reserve is located high in the Andes around 13,000 feet so it receives quite a bit of rain. Access points are located past Termas de Papallacta as well as near the summit on the Via Interoceanica (as you reach the summit, look for a cement hut 1/4 mile off the road to the north).

There are a few hosteria's (small family run hotels) that are inexpensive. A few of them are located along the road from [wiki=aadcd2017119cf69f6e31dcb24e52a02]Quito[/wiki] to Papallacta. Ask the bus driver to stop in Papallacta and you will easily find one if you continue walking along the road.

    * The Hostal/Restaurante Antisana is about 200 m from the Terms and costs $20 per person (includes a breakfast) for a room with private bathroom and hot water. It is clean and quiet. Also there are two small pools with hot water in the garden. Restaurant on site that serves meals such as trout for $5. Telephone: 062-895-016 / 099-526-4061. Update August 2014: My room had luke warm water (not hot) and it was cold. Bed was comfortable though. Breakfast was poor, apart from the juice, and the pools in the garden were empty.

    * You can also stay at 'Termas de Papallacta Hot Springs Resort' which is more luxurious and more expensive. Includes entrance to the baths, some good offers to be had on internet if you are travelling as a couple (eg. $99 for a double room). Expensive for solo travellers.

    * The Hostal Coturpa is in the town of Papallacta. The rooms are comfortable and come with hot water, space heaters (wasn't always power to the sockets and therefore wasn't able to use the heater) and plush blankets as well as breakfast for ~$23/pp. Cheaper if you tell them you don't want breakfast. During weekends there are also hot pools on the lower level. Telephone: 62-320-640 / 62-320-180 / 08-6280274

There is a bus stop on the main road, go there and hail the first bus to Quito (about $2 - $2.50) or the other side if you want to go to Tena. Or hitchhike.
