The main town at the bottom of the Flinders Ranges is Port Augusta, which is a 3.5 hour drive from Adelaide along Port Wakefield Road (Route A1) via [wiki=347b81fb4e34b85f8ac11f096612d60c]Snowtown[/wiki] and [wiki=1b5e26acc0c98eac679f2de8b2d65c09]Port Pirie[/wiki] (both of which are bypassed). Wilpena Pound is a 4.5-5 hour drive from Adelaide, either via Port Wakefield Road, Quorn and Hawker or via the more scenic route through the [wiki=cf6251dd48942b47ab51f43ba11dab03]Clare Valley[/wiki]. To venture into the Northern Flinders ranges will be a further drive, often along dirt roads. Sealed roads only run as far north as Lyndhurst (on the road to Marree) and Blinman (on the Wilpena Pound Road).
There are plenty of services currently operating to Port Augusta. Greyhound [url=http://www.greyhound.com.au/]](on the Adelaide-Alice Springs route) and Premier Stateliner [url=http://www.premierstateliner.com.au/[/url]](on its Adelaide-Eyre Peninsula routes) currently operate frequent coach services through Port Augusta.
There are currently no scheduled public transport services into the central and northern Flinders Ranges, including to Wilpena Pound. The Yorke Peninsula Coaches [http://www.ypcoaches.com.au/[/url] "Mid-North Passenger" and "Upper North Intertown" services operate in the Mid and Upper North towns, including one service weekly (currently on Fridays) as far as Quorn, but this is still a significant distance from Wilpena Pound. Travellers wishing to travel here may have to hire a car in Adelaide or Port Augusta, or find a scheduled arranged tour.
Great Southern Railways [url=http://www.gsr.com.au]]currently operate the Indian Pacific and Ghan trains once or twice weekly to and from Adelaide, passing through Port Augusta. There are no scheduled train services further than Port Augusta, apart from the tourist Pichi Richi Railway [http://www.prr.org.au/[/url] which runs infrequent services as far as Quorn, but is more of a tourist attraction than a means of transport.
Sharp Airlines [http://sharpairlines.com/] currently run 2 services on weekdays between Adelaide and Port Augusta (there is one service on Sundays and none on Saturdays). Port Augusta Airport is located 10 minutes' drive from the City Centre. No scheduled passenger airline flies into other areas of the Flinders Ranges.
St Mary Peak, the highest point in the Flinders Ranges with spectacular views all round.
* Wilpena Pound, a natural crater that is about 80km wide. The most famous attraction of the Flinders Ranges.
* Dutchman's Stern, fantastic views and vegetation. To hike up and down takes about 3hrs.
* Brachina Gorge, location of a 20km geological pathway.
* Arkaroo Rock, the hike takes about 2 hrs and you can see 5000 year old Aboriginal rock paintings that depict the creation of Wilpena Pound. The Adnayamathanha say that a celebration took place where Wilpena Pound (which is Ikara to them) is located now. The people celebrated happily, but suddenly, two giant snakes (Akarra) appeared. They raised a lot of dust to confuse the people, and then they ate most of them. After that, they lay down in a big circle and turned to stone. Today, their bodies form the large crater of Wilpena Pound.
* Warren Gorge, an easy walk where you can see the rare yellow-footed rock wallaby if you are lucky.
* Alligator Gorge, several shorter and longer walking tracks. The bottom is only a few metres wide and there is a little creek, so you might get wet. There are no alligators, the gorge is called like this because it has the shape of one.
