Coolangatta was one of the first settlements along the gold coast. It is named after the schooner Coolangatta which was wrecked there in 1846. As a border town Coolangatta included a customs office, boatshed and government wharf. The Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club opened on 13 September 1911.Guesthouses and hotels were erected and a commercial centre soon followed. The headland itself is an important landmark and tourist destination. Coolangatta symbolizes the terminus of the Gold Coast and the long strip of beach that begins at Main Beach forty kilometers to the north.

Coolangatta is the perfect place for a summer lover. With the warm weather throughout the year, this is the perfect place to go if you enjoy sunny and warm days. The average temperature during summer sit around 27ºC (80ºF), but can drop to around 15ºC (59ºF). The hottest months for Coolangatta is January, February, and March. By plane
Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is the main airport in Coolangatta and it is located about 5 minutes from the center. Some of the airline that flies to Gold Coast AIrport is AirAsia, Air New Zealand, Air North, Jetstar, Qantas, Scoot, Tigerair, and Virgin Australia. Gold Coast is a relatively small airport which makes it easy for families, business groups and other travelers to find their way in the airport.
Brisbane Airport is another airport located about 1hr 15 minutes north from Coolangatta. This a bigger airport that cooperates with many different airlines, such as China Airlines, Jetstar, Skytrans, Air New Zealand, among others.

To dive from Canberra to Coolangatta would take approximately 11hrs 45 minutes. Canberra is located 1100 km (683.5 miles) south from Coolangatta. The major roads that would take you to Coolangatta from Canberra are M23, M31, M7, M2, A28, M1, A1, and A43. To drive to Coolangatta from Melbourne would take about 17 hrs 15 minutes. Melbourne is located 1689 km (1050 miles) from Coolangatta which clearly you can understand due to the 17 hour drive. The major roads that will take you from Melbourne to Coolangatta are M80, M31, M7, M2, A28, M1, and A1. Many of these roads are the major once and appears in more than one direction. They can take you to multiple different places.

Trains are available but they are limited and usually takes longer than to drive. NSW TrainLink Coach Network is the main train network that covers the places around Coolangatta. It covers places from all over New South Wales up to Brisbane. By bus
To get from the airport in Coolangatta to the center is very easy. By taking rout 702 you can get of at many different places. To go from Gold Coast Airport to Surfers Paradise, which is where most of the hotels are located takes about 40 minutes. The service runs every 30 minutes which makes it easy for you to catch a bus and get to your final destination.

By car
To get around in Coolangatta is easy and if you have access to a car it makes it even easier. It all depends on what your goal with your stay in Coolangatta is, but if you want to explore a bit, a car is to recommend. Car rentals is available at the airport which makes it easy to both rent and return the car. Most of the big car rental firms are represented at the airport such as Avis, Hertz, Europcar, and Redspot among others. By bus
The cities around Coolangatta works with partnership with Translink to provide public transportation. SEEQ is an electronic travel card available for purses. There is a special card developed for tourists in particular. Midday at Coolangatta Beach
In Coolangatta there are different things to see and experience. Things are limited due to the small suburb but the things you can see are truly breathtaking..
*Pat Fagan Park - This nature based park is a beachside park giving amazing views of Coolangatta Beach. Popular for wedding ceremonies this park is filled with green-leafy trees and walking trails. Also a perfect place to have a family barbeque with picnic areas and barbeque facilities.
*Snorkeling - With all the reefs around snorkeling is the best way to see underwater wonders. Any shops along the oceanside sell snorkels and masks for your underwater enjoyment.
*Captain Cook’s Memorial/Lighthouse - Not your typical looking “lighthouse” this monument is to commemorate Captain Cook for his voyage along the east coast of Australia in 1770. The monument is called Point Danger Light being one of seven of the monuments along the east coast of Australia. Many history lessons to be learned here with views of Byron Bay and Duranbar beach. Also during the winter you can do a bit of whale watching as fleets of them go by every once in a while.

In Coolangatta the beaches are the main points of interest. There are so many things to do there that there are no such things as dull moments. Six beaches in total, Coolangatta has some of the best surf spots around. After the sunny days in Coolangatta have come to an end there is also nightlife and clubs to fulfill your dancing needs.
*Coolangatta Beach - One of the more popular beaches to go to on a nice sunny day. Patrolled by lifeguards at almost all times it is a clean and safe beach to relax and have fun.
*Kirra Beach - Kirra Beach is mostly known for surfing. Northwest of Coolangatta beach, this beach is a little hidden, having to go through a park to get there but once you get there you’ll never want to leave.
*Snapper Rocks - Snapper Rocks is worldly known for surfing. Home to the Quiksilver Pro surfing competition each year in January, this event brings in people from all around the world.
*Rainbow Bay & Greenmount Beach - These two beaches are the only ones in Coolangatta that face north so they are suitable for swimming. They are just as beautiful as all the other beaches in Coolangatta.
*The Patch - For all your nightlife needs, a collection of bars and clubs in a downtown setting. Located more inland, away from the coast.
*Arts and Crafts Market - This market is held on the second sunday of every month. With almost 150 different stalls selling a wide range of things from skincare products to fresh produce to handmade crafts this is a great place to go to get creative and check out the local culture. 8am-2:30pm, located at Marine Parade,Queen Elizabeth Park, Coolangatta, QLD, 4225.
*Scuba Diving - With tons of different dive sites, Coolangatta offers all of your diving needs. Popular dive sites include Kirra Reef, Cook Island,and Nine Mile Reef.
*Surf Lessons - Walking on Water Surf and School is one of the best places in Coolangatta to learn how to surf. With very experienced instructors, it is easy to learn the difficult skill of surfing.
*Gold Coast Skydiving - This one for the adventurous souls. Gold Coast Skydive offers you the chance to jump out of a plane and see all of the beautiful sites of Coolangatta from above.
